Upgraded to yosmite, when after logging in it can take 10 minutes or more to go to desktop, don't know why, maybe it is the ram or just my iMac as it is nearly 3 years old, what do I do about it.
You don't offer any information which could be used to provide advice. Often not enough ram is the problem, often there are incompatible applications and sometimes there are hardware issues. Post an EtreCheck report and you'll likely get some answers http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
I have only 4gb ram in my desktop iMac, and checked apple do not supply ram for my machine anymore, so don't know where to go to. Apple were not very helpful at all. All they said reload the machine again with yosemite, wish I could go back to maverick as that was ok

4Gb is plenty if you are just using Internet, listening to music, watching videos and working on documents, etc.
Try removing all your login items in System Preferences/ Users & Groups. That might speed things up.
Select Macintosh HD as the Startup Disk.
