I have multiple hard drives that I'm storing raw footage on. If I load footage from hard drive 1 into a project and I have the same raw footage saved on hard drive 2, can I delete the footage from hard drive 1 without losing it from my project? Will my computer recognize it from hard drive 2?
When you add footage, and choose "leave in place", the clip in your library points to the file location - for example in /Volumes/Drive1/Stuff, say.
Now suppose you delete the original file. Your clip will be offline and will display a frightening red in FCP X. If you want the clip to point to the other copy of the media in Drive2, all you have to do is File->Relink Files... and in the ensuing dialog select the drive. Assuming the files are identical, FCP X should have no problem relinking.
Will I have to do relink each clip individually or is there a way to do it by event or library?
With any luck, you should be able to relink everything at once. Just point to the top level of the drive and let FCP figure it out.
