Formula Using Decimals Displayed In Calculation

Is there a way to reduce the decimals of numbers in cells referred to by another cell in a formula so that the answer in the formula cell will only take into account the number of decimals displayed in each of the cells that compose the formula?

Does the ROUND function do what you are trying to do?

The original value is in column A. The same value is in column B, but with only 2 decimal places displayed. The formula in E rounds the value in B before multiplying.

=ROUND(B2,2)*C2

(You have to specify the number of decimal places you want, in this example 2. Numbers can't automatically detect the number of places displayed, though that is possible via AppleScript.)

Hi tomas,

the number of decimals displayed in each of the cells

has nothing to do with how Numbers sees the values.

Data Format in a cell is simply for we humans. Numbers sees it to full (binary) precision.

I suggest you save the ROUND function for the final result. Let Numbers handle the calculations up to that point.

Please post a screen shot of a small part of your table to show us what you are trying to do.

Ian.
