iPhone5 Restore icloud back up to higher iOS version

Experts, I need help to restore my replacement iphone5 from icloud backup.

My iphone5 was running iOS 8.1 and backed up periodically (icloud).

Yesterday I got a replacement iphone5 since current one was having battery problems and during battery replacement process apple service-tech couldn't revive it.

The new iphone5 is running on iOS 7.02 and doesn't let me restore from icloud backup due to iOS version incompatibility.

When I try to look for software update, the only option I get is to update iOS 8.3.

My question is that

- Do the iOS version have to be exactly same for backup to be restored ?

- Should I apply iOS 8.3 on new phone ? Will I be able to restore back up that was on iOS 8.1 ?

Apple has already stopped signing iOS 8.1, which means you can only restore your phone to the latest firmware version, which is iOS 8.3.

If you have a backup copy of the information from your previous device, you can restore it.

Update the replacement iPhone to iOS 8.3 and then you will be able to use

the restore made with iOS 8.1

You cannot use a restore made with a version of iOS later than the version

currently on the iPhone.

I will give it shot now.

Update to 8.3, Erase and reset all and restore the back up that was done on iOS 8.1 .
