menu jumping!

Whenever I get even close to the top of the remote screen it jumps down and displays the remote desktop menus, it's unbelievably irritating and inconvenient.

Is there any way to disable it, i.e. make the delay longer or have it only appear on a keystroke or something?

I find that as soon as I get close to selecting anything from the remote mac's menu bar then it jumps out of the way before I can click, it makes it barely usable.

(Oh and one other peeve. When I first power on the Mac Mini, to be able to use ARD at all I have to first log in from it's keyboard. Is there any way to stop that? Surely the whole point is that I should be able to do everything from the other Mac using ARD. Pretty sure it used to do that until one of the updates.)
