When I make a phone call and want to view the screen the phone stays black when I take the phone away from my ear. I can not hang up or disconnect from the phone call.

Do you have a case or screen protector on the phone? It sounds as if the proximity sensor is being blocked. What troubleshooting have you tried? User steps are to power the device off/on, then a reset, holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. No data will be affected by either of these moves. If you have a case and/or screen protector on the device, you may want to remove to test the device.
