No sound for .avi file

Check QuickTime's MIME settings.
Quicktime>Quicktime Player Preferences>Advanced

Click on the MIME Settings button.

In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
While you’re at it make sure all the boxes are enabled by clicking on the corresponding triangles so that they are pointed down.
This will show the “hidden” boxes especially the Video box. This box will enable you to play .avi files.

Click the OK button.

Restart your computer.

If the above does not work, since you have an Intel, download & install the Universal version of VLC media player.
If this works for you then make VLC your default player to play all your .avi files.

OK, Im having the same problem with an .avi file. My question is, I tried burining the file to a DVD, andl also there was no sound on the dvd. So my question is, if I get the .avi file to play with audio and everything. When I try to burn it to a dvd will there be sound? and why was there no sound since the beginning? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!

You will need to try it to find that out. Please post back to let us know if it worked.

Could be any number of reasons! No codecs, incorrect codecs, plug-in(s) not enabled, system and/or file corruption, etc. Who knows?

Well I tried the MIME thing and that did not work, but then I downloaded the VLC player and VOILA! it worked! So now that I had sound I burned a dvd using toast and PFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTT! No sound at all! What could be wrong?

Well I have worked making vcd's on windows xp. But this is the first time I have ever had a mac and I have ever had a dvd burner!! INSIDE A REAL GOOD COMPUTER!! LOL!! So im new to this whole experimenting with burning dvd's thingy. I cant get it to work........its a bit frustrating.

Therefore, I am assuming you have never repaired permissions? Then you better check out the following:

Save and/or quit your applications & doucuments

Go to Applications>Utilities Folder

Click Disk Utility

Click the Volumn (HD) that you want to check.

Click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (Don't worry about verifying)

At the bottom of window when the repairs have finished, you will see the “most important thing”:
Permission Repairs Complete
The previliges have been repaired or completed on the selected volumn.

Restart your computer.
Same directions are also in your OS Mac Help Menu.

This has been very helpful but im not getting anywhere with the sound on the .avi file awwwwwwwwwwwwww 😟. I was told by another individual to get a AC3 audio decoder and convert it to mp3 and then encode it, but this is all like gibberish to a new time mac user. I repaired permissions and I restarted my laptop but still no success. :(( I will never look down on mac, its just all this is new to me so I dont know what to do. With my XP i would simply burn a vcd and voila! no problemo! But with this mac, its just making me think harder.....lol. But in the end I know it will be well worth it. Thanks For The WelcomE! Apparently, your only problem now is trying to burn a .avi file on a DVD and getting sound?

Another sourse: Click on your desktop>Finder>Help>Mac Help
In the search field type dvd or dvd burning. Basically the same help topics come up.

Finder>Go>Utilities>Disk Utility
Click on the "?" in the bottom left corner. The Help window will open up.
Type the same thing as mentioned above. For some reason, there are a few different DVD Help Topics & a couple of Support Articles.

A good reference book for a newbie (I am also a newbie to the CAT System still learning my way around but, not to Macs):
Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Tiger Ed - David Pogue . This book is very easy reading, non technichal & non geeky. I strongly recommend this book as it takes you step-by-step through Tiger.

Tiger For Dummies

The latter 2 books can have several authors as there are a series of them. Use Google and/or Spotlight to search:

As to the first half of your question (AC3 to QT), you can try the A52Codec Universal download. It will convert the AC3 audio to QT compatible stereo/2-ch mono and, if Apple adds "encoded output" support, supposedly can be set to pass the encoded audio to an external AC3 decoder like VLC and the DVD Player currently do. Unfortunately, this is not a bi-directional component.

Ok, now I am confused. I thought you were getting both video & sound w/VLC. Now you are saying you are not getting any video with VLC?

Forget about QT playing .avi files. It won't. It doesn't like them. VLC takes over for QT. I have VLC as my default player to play all of my .avi files. Will explain that later.......

Back to the drawing board........Can you please explain again what is going on with VLC currently?
Matter of fact, are you having problems with one particular .avi file or is it all .avi files?

The comment that QuickTime won't play AVI videos is flat out wrong: what QuickTime needs is a codec to recognize the video format used in the AVI package. (AVI is not actually a format, rather a suitcase holding the audio and video files which are themselves in particular formats such as DivX and Xvid for video, mp3 and ??? for sound).

To use QT for AVIs, you need to download and install one or more video codecs - DivX and Xvid are the the most common formats, the commercially-developed and open-source, respectively. Previously, I would get sound only for most AVI videos, but as soon as I installed the DivX codec (v. 6.4.0), QT Pro 7.1.3 not only played AVI movies, but allowed editing and saving as .mov files.

Two Mac versions and two Windows versions of the DivX codec are available at:

The v. 5.1.1 DivX codec is bare-bones last-generation, and I don't know about compatibility issues. DivX codec v. 6.4.0 comes as a package with a player and utilities for some file conversions, adding HTML tags to facilitate web posting, etc. You don't have to use the player they supply, the codec works with any media player, including QT. If you get a demo player that turns into a pumpkin, QT should still do the job, compatibility willing.
