Rebooting with Bootcamp is Broken

Hi Loner T,

I’m running OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks, with Windows 7 installed on a Bootcamp partition, and Parallels Desktop 9 on my MacBook Pro Retina 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with 16 GB RAM, 500 GB Flash Storage. Everything was working fine across the board, from booting with the Option key to launch OS X or Windows, or from within OS X running Parallels to use Windows 7 which continues to work well.

Recently I discovered that when I hold down the Option key when booting up my computer my only option is Retina or Recovery-10-9. If I go to my System Preferences/Startup Disk, I can choose either BOOTCAMP Windows or RETINA OS X 10.9.5. By selecting BOOTCAMP Windows and Restarting, the result is “No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key.” To proceed, I have to force a Restart, hold down the Option key and my choice again is Retina or Recovery-10-9.

On my Desktop I can see my Bootcamp partition and view the contents of the drive. I can run Parallels Desktop 9 and Windows 7 without a hitch. But if I want to boot my computer with Windows that option is broken. Is there a way to repair Bootcamp without having to start all over by deleting my partition, and reinstalling everything on the Windows side?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 3,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz

Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers.

  1. Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
  2. P (Print list of parts)
  3. R (Recover)
  4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
  5. H (chooses Hybrid)
  6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
  7. Y (Good for GRUB question)
  8. N (part 2 boot flag)
  9. N (part 3 boot flag)
  10. Y (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
  11. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
  12. W (Write the new MBR)
  13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
  14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, select Bootcamp and Click Restart.

Hi Loner T,

I apologize. I’m a brain donor and can’t figure out where to start in order to follow your instructions. How do I find the MBR and what Application would I use?

Without making any adjustments to my present situation, the answers to your Test Questions numbers 1 through 4 are YES to each. However when I Restart after selecting Bootcamp, the resulting prompt is “No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key.” Then again to proceed I have to force a Restart, hold down the Option key and choose Retina or Recovery-10-9. Could Recovery-10-9 correct the problem?

Thanks!

May 30, 2015 10:07 AM in response to jmel

If you have installed GPT Fdisk, then go to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal will give you a new terminal window. In the Terminal window, type sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0 and press Enter. Enter your password, if necessary, and type each numbered command. If you see any error messages, please stop and post back.

Perfect. I jumped into Terminal and entered the command for the following response:

It appears that I don’t have a gdisk? The screen captures below show BOOTCAMP and RETINA as well as the folders within BOOTCAMP...

I held down the Option key upon reboot and Bootcamp presented me with the option of starting in OS X or Windows! When I selected Windows, it went through the normal sequence of launching Windows, and tried to install and update device driver software. Then followed with a message that the device driver software was not successfully installed. I had no control of the cursor, mouse or any keys.

To make sure Windows was still OK, I launched Windows 7 through Parallels / OS X, and it opened up fine.

I'll try restarting Windows from the Startup Disk:
