My mac's space is getting eaten up with apps. But when I look at the size of the apps folder it is only 29 gigs. Why is this happening
and how do I free up space?

I did a quick check on my own machine. It says I have 21GB of apps but the apps folder says 17GB so those numbers don't match in my case either. Maybe you have a number of apps located in other folders?
That would make sense. I have looked and don't see any apps anywhere else.
You can check you launchpad to see if there are any apps on there that don't exist in your applications folder or vice versa. It could also be that other files are seen as apps by the mac. I don't know how and I don't know which files that would be though.
First perform a Spotlight reindex:

If that does not correct the display, download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes and allow you to determine where there may be discrepancies.
