Can't start Apple Hardware Test

My mid 2011 27 inch iMac running OS 10.10.30 is having random panic attacks due to memory leaks. I have closed all apps in an effort to eliminate possible software conflicts and did not find a conflict. I have tried to running AHT using Apple Support instruction but always end up at the log in screen. Any advise would be appreciated.

OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Neat program! It has been so long since I have had a problem that I have not visited the forums and am way behind. Thank you!

Richard1,

I suspect your problem is linked to using CleanMyMac. This app is considered malware by many experienced users on these forums. OS X does not require antivirus, cleaning, or other third party maintenance in order to perform well. It only takes a little common sense.

What common sense?

  • Never download from a torrent site.
  • If you get an add, pop-pup, e-mail or phone call advising your computer has been compromised, this is a SCAM!!!!
  • Keep OS X up-to-date.

How to get rid of CleanMyMac?

Here is an article that explains how to do so:

How do you know they are memory leaks? With OS 10.9 and above, RAM will almost always be full by design. The new memory management system does this to save time an energy with reading code from you boot drive all the time.

I have tried to running AHT using Apple Support instruction but always end up at the log in screen.

Did you note in the instructions that you are supposed to boot from the Applications Install DVD that originally came with your iMac?
