Q: My recent calls appearing on another iPhone!?

Hi,

Hopefully you can help.

I use my phone for business and we have noticed in the last few days that all of the calls I make and receive are appearing in my wife's iPhone recent call history?

I have hunted high and low in settings on both phones but with no joy.

It is only affecting calls i make, not the other way round? so i am not seeing calls my wife makes on her phone in my recent call history?

It is also not affecting text messages...

We are both using the same iCloud account but the inconsistencies above suggest its something more involved (or very simple!)

The slightly odd thing is that it only seems to do it when my phone is at home, i went out this afternoon and the calls made/received have not appeared on her history. so maybe its a wifi thing?...but...

I also phoned vodafone when i got home to see if they could help (they couldn't!) and that short dial number is also not appearing on her history?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.3

So originally I got on board on this post back around May 24-27, when my missed calls from my work phone started showing up on my wife's phone.  She dialed that number back assuming it was a missed call on her phone.  It turned out it was my work contact and he was really perplexed to hear from my wife.  Due to ATT, the last name showed up on this desk phone and he answered it.  We had a chuckle.  Nonetheless, it can get serious as my wife's phone is usually with kids and they have dialed folks in the past.

Naturally I wanted to stop this.  I upgrade to the new iOS the day it shows up and my wife is blissfully content with her "iOS whatever.whenver"  Only when nudged by the favorite apps to update, she does so.

The call log was multilateral for all iOS devices on iOS 8.4.1.  The only expection is my wife's phone (iOS 7.1).  Her call log did not show up anywhere expect on her phone. (Yes, the call log was shared and yes, I understand the responses from few key individuals about sharing the Apple ID, I will get to that)

So we split up the IDs; a hassle, but necessary in the one factor at time method of trouble shooting.  Yes, she doesn't get those call anymore.  You can call that problem solved if you had one device - one ID setup.

The problem still persists between my four devices,  2 iphones (personal and work) and 2 ipad (personal and work).  The call log syncing is random and not fully complete. A few of the calls sync up after a couple of days.  I have tried cleaning up all the call logs and still get a few of missed calls show up a day or two later.  Knowing Apple, they would not roll this out half baked.  The sync feature, if intended,  should be absolutely seamless.

I have tried all the settings imaginable and if you are able to glean my personality, you can see that I have tried everything, one setting at a time.

Not counting the users who don't know or care about syncing/icloud/call log, there are 3 firm camps in this discussion:

    • The Absolutists - This is what it is.  Don't share the apple IDs.  If you don't like this go back to smoke signals and morse code.
    • The Exasperated - We love the iphones but we don't like this.  This is not acceptable.  Are the experts able to help? The Absolutists' response makes them more exasperated.
    • And there are folks like me, the Accommodaters - Something has changed and I don't like it.  I can certainly see the value in this for some users, however can I have this turned off for my phones. Pretty please????

I hope this works out for all the users as they need it to work for them. Cheers

What were you told when you demonstrated this issue to the resident "Genius" at the Apple Store?

I have one phone and one ipad each for work and personal use.  4 devices total and a single user.  All the calls are being synced up between the devices.  It is not optimal, I can't have 4 apple IDs for each device.

Make up your mind.  Is the syncing random or do all the calls sync between devices?  No one can help you without seeing an accurate description of the reason for your unhappiness.

You misunderstand, you are free to use your stuff however you choose, but if you choose to use it in a non recommended fashion expect unexpected results.

, you're not going to find a lot of help from this list, the signal to noise ratio is extremely high.  After getting the same types of responses you are seeing, I figured out the cause with the ole binary chop myself.  This should fix what you are seeing:

In Settings: iCloud: turn off iCloud drive syncing.  You can leave all of your other iCloud syncs on.

This will also work if you are sharing the same ID between multiple phone numbers, which means it will work if you are sharing one iCloud account across multiple people.  I know you've heard differently, but the world didn't actually implode when this was implemented.

Well, let's say the call is being made to your iPhone 1, but you pick it up on your iPad. Does the call list show the call on those two devices only but not, say, your iPhone 2 or your Mac? What about if it is made to your iPhone 2, but you pick it up on your Mac? Does it show on the iPhone 2 and the Mac only?

Also, are all of the devices that you are comparing running on iOS 8 or Yosemite?

Finally, is the list you are comparing both incoming and outgoing calls?

I see different results on my iPhone 4 than on my Mac running Yosemite and my iPhone 5s running iOS 8. I also see outgoing calls only on the device where the outgoing call was made.

Do any of those possibilities help to reconcile the disparities?

    Cheers,

I have spent 3 days now trying to assess why my ex wife, who hasn't updated her iPhone for 2 years or backed it up and has a different email address (but old connection to my iTunes) has now suddenly started receiving all of my phone calls. I **** you not. So thank you for your very succinct, accurate reality of a problem. You my friend are spot on.

There's a lot of criticism in this thread regarding sharing Apple ID's.   I know it's not recommend by Apple, but I've always been able to find a way to make it work.   Our call history also started popping up on multiple phones after iOS 9 upgrades.   My upgrade issues always center the ID's for iTunes, iMessages, and FaceTime.   This time, it was iMessages and FaceTime.   I keep a separate Apple ID for personal things - not shared with my wife.   FaceTime and iMessages are on my personal Apple ID and tied to my cell #.   The Apple upgrades always change these 2 back to the shared Apple ID.   Our call history stopped sharing when I made the change.

I know this thread is old and long...   But what worked for me, was unbinding FaceTime on the secondary phone.  I signed out of just FaceTime.  (I think someone has posted about this before)

    Background:

I ran into this "shared' recent call history after upgrading to iOS9.  Let me start by saying, I do not share my Apple ID with anyone but myself.  I do, however have 2 phones, 2 Macs, 1 iPad.  I didn't want the two phones to share the same recent call history, because that defeats the purpose of having two phones, from a phone perspective, while I do want both to be able to access iCloud services for other functions.

Steps of what I did (this is on iOS9, I don't recall if these are the exact same settings panes on iOS8, but the idea is the same.  Also acknowledged that there are probably many steps that are unrelated, but I figured a methodic approach would remedy my issue.):

    • On Phone 1, leave iCloud, App & iTunes Store, Message, FaceTime, all logged into iCloud.
    • On Phone 2, log everything out of Apple ID:
      • Signed out of Settings->iCloud, which will delete Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, iCloud Drive etc.
      • Signed out of Settings->App and iTunes Stores
      • Signed out of Settings->Messages->Send & Receive
      • Signed out of Settings->FaceTime (I suspect this is the big culprit)
    • Restarted both phones just to be thorough (probably unnecessary).  Made a call from both phones to different places...the recent history isn't shared. One of the above things is causing the sync.
    • On Phone 2:
      • Signed into Settings->iCloud.
      • Signed into Setting->App and iTunes Stores.
    • Made calls from both phones, recent history still not crossed polluted!  At this point, checked all my iCloud services work (Mail, Contacts, Calendar, iCloud Drive, etc) and I can access iTunes, Apps.  iMessage also works, as long as I'm only using the Phone Number.
    • Then I tested binding my Settings->Messages and Settings->FaceTime to my Apple ID.  Call history started to sync again.
    • Signed out of just Settings->FaceTime and recent call history stopped sharing.

FWIW, this will also disable some of the continuity features on the secondary device.  I know for a fact, I used to have FaceTime enabled uniquely and the recent call history was not shared.  So I'm still playing around to see if there is some sequence that can get this back.

Using two different IDs has a cost: I cannot share with my wife (via icloud drive) data related to some useful third party apps like goodnotes. So you cannot say it's a full solution.

This morning I updated my iphone to ios9.0.1 and I don't see anymore my wife's calls. She didn't update her phone, she still sees mine. Maybe has been fixed

I suspect it's a bug. Or, worse, apple is not mentioning de facto their intention to implicitely limit no. of devices that can share apps paying only once.

I've found no place in apple websites where they say it's a nice feature...

1 user 1 ID, that is how the system works. You can choose any method you like, but don't expect a non recommended method to work properly.
