Q: My recent calls appearing on another iPhone!?

Hi,

Hopefully you can help.

I use my phone for business and we have noticed in the last few days that all of the calls I make and receive are appearing in my wife's iPhone recent call history?

I have hunted high and low in settings on both phones but with no joy.

It is only affecting calls i make, not the other way round? so i am not seeing calls my wife makes on her phone in my recent call history?

It is also not affecting text messages...

We are both using the same iCloud account but the inconsistencies above suggest its something more involved (or very simple!)

The slightly odd thing is that it only seems to do it when my phone is at home, i went out this afternoon and the calls made/received have not appeared on her history. so maybe its a wifi thing?...but...

I also phoned vodafone when i got home to see if they could help (they couldn't!) and that short dial number is also not appearing on her history?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.3

If you had read my post, you would see that I was talking about one user with several devices.  Are you claiming that each Apple device should have its own Apple ID?  Where does Apple make that claim or are you just saying this?  I notice your statement was devoid of any documentation - anyone can type words - just saying.  Thanks for the link, I have already submitted my feedback comments but as you know, Apple doesn't respond individually to them.

One user with multiple devices is supposed to be one Apple ID.  If anyone tells you differently, suggest you ask for a source.

I didn't ask for *your* advice particularly... I was responding to "advice" given here that seemed incorrect which is why I asked for documentation.  Since you don't have any, why did you bother to respond just repeating what others have said?

FWIW, I haven't turned on the new iCloud drive and still see the problem randomly.  Given the timing on when the merged calls appear, I suspect its happening during iCloud backup.

When I have 6 Apple devices that I use, 4 of them iOS, and I am the only user of all of them, it makes no sense to have separate iCloud accounts for each device. In fact, it makes perfect sense to share an iCloud ID because it allows me to share my iCloud-stored documents, contacts, calendars, notes, reminders and messages and update them on whichever device I have in hand at the time. I do this all the time, frequently several times a day. But the fact that I am sharing an iCloud account among my 2 Macbooks 2, iPhones and 2 iPads does not automatically mean that I want to share recent call lists across them.

Ditto on my problems starting with IOS 9.  Been running the same iphone 5s and 5c without any problems until now.  I'm hoping its just a bug that will be fixed soon.  Is there any consensus on a solid solution?

Absolutely, I totally agree.  What is more, contrary to what is posted here and elsewhere, Apple does not claim that call history lists were ever intended to be shared across devices as a feature of a shared Apple ID.  I suspect that if you turned WiFi off, the problem would go away but that's not a serious solution just like using different Apple IDs is.  I had explicitly marked my settings to turn off "Allow calls on Other Devices" and to turn off the handoff setting before the calls have randomly appeared from my other devices. Since we don't understand the cause of the problem (there may be multiple), it's hard to speculate.  For example, someone claimed somewhere that placing one device in and out of airplane mode did the trick.  That would work in the case that it is Wi-Fi related since it may obtain a new IP address but it didn't work for me since my IP didn't change (I suspect that resetting the router may affect this for the same reason).  I don't want to add to the folklore on this issue - if I find a method that I know works, I'll post it.  BTW, as of today, I seemed to have mysteriously stopped getting call history from my other devices for no apparent reason - easy come, easy go as they say!

It is not a bug. It is a feature. Go to Settings/Phone. You will note that "Calls on other devices" is turned on. Turn if off for any device when you don't want to see calls made from other devices. The feature allows you to make and receive calls from other devices sharing an iCloud ID and near each other. I used it yesterday, for example, to answer a call to my iPhone, but from the iPad I was using at the time. Very convenient. If you don't want to use this feature turn off "calls from other devices," and on an iPad, go to Facetime and turn off "Calls from iPhone." If you have the call feature on the Recents feature is on automatically.

If the devices are not being used by the same person, also don't share Apple IDs. Instead use Family Sharing.

    Hi Lawrence,

    >> You will note that "Calls on other devices" is turned on

Where did this come from?  Did you not read my post where I said in my case it was explicitly turned off?  Getting calls on other devices has nothing to do with the call list problem.  I'm not getting calls sent to or received from any other device - the history is just randomly being updated from other devices - all who have this feature turned off.

And it is turned off on ALL devices that share the Apple ID?

I'd like to add another symptom to the problem.  Now my wife is getting missed call notifications for my phone on her lockscreen.  When she unlocks her phone and looks at her recents.... there is nothing there.  Bizarre.
