Q: My recent calls appearing on another iPhone!?

Hi,

Hopefully you can help.

I use my phone for business and we have noticed in the last few days that all of the calls I make and receive are appearing in my wife's iPhone recent call history?

I have hunted high and low in settings on both phones but with no joy.

It is only affecting calls i make, not the other way round? so i am not seeing calls my wife makes on her phone in my recent call history?

It is also not affecting text messages...

We are both using the same iCloud account but the inconsistencies above suggest its something more involved (or very simple!)

The slightly odd thing is that it only seems to do it when my phone is at home, i went out this afternoon and the calls made/received have not appeared on her history. so maybe its a wifi thing?...but...

I also phoned vodafone when i got home to see if they could help (they couldn't!) and that short dial number is also not appearing on her history?

Using one shared Apple ID in a single household was around LONG before Family Sharing. The App Store and Mac App Store required this to use the same purchases across all your devices. Apple has never said "stop doing this". They say to not share your Apple ID, but that means with people outside your house. Multiple people have been told by Apple support staff that this is a bug. Let's all just wait and see if Apple sorts this out.

If anyone does provide feedback to Apple, please give them a link to this thread. While Apple doesn't participate in these discussions, I'm sure they will read them.

Yes, and it never worked for very well because it was never designed for that. To resolve the many, many complaints about that, Apple finally came up with a multi-person solution, Family Sharing. Why don't you want to use it?

Quite the contrary. It was designed EXACTLY for that. Apple advertised it. They sold it in their developers conference Keynote addresses. Except for the merged "recent calls" list, it has worked extraordinarily well for a decade now for me and billions of users around the world.

Then why have we fielded so many complaints and technical support requests here?

Why are you unwilling or unable to use Family Sharing?

This thread is ridiculous... After speaking with Apple tech support it is NOT supposed to merge recent call lists on devices

I don't suppose you asked what does cause it or is that not your concern?

You don't speak to Apple Tech Support. You speak to one low level ("tier 1") customer service representative out of thousands. Who really doesn't know much more than is in their script and Apple's Knowledge Base. And most don't even know that much. Sadly, some of them make up answers to get you off the phone, because they are rated on how many calls they handle per hour. If you were upgraded to a Tier 2 or higher technician then maybe what you were told is correct.

My wife and I share an iTunes account, and why wouldn't we? We are one household. Account sharing was designed for this purpose. We too recently started seeing merged recent call lists. I have done all of the suggested changes. Turning off iCloud Drive seems to have stopped it. I later turned iCloud Drive back on and the problem has not returned.

For those insisting that this is "working as designed" and we "should not share an Apple ID" across our own devices, please stop. Apple would have advertised and documented this "feature" if this were part of the intended design. Apple is very thorough in this regard. For a long time Apple has extolled the advantages of sharing an Apple ID across devices. Saying we should NOT be sharing an Apple ID goes blatantly in the face of what Apple tells us we should be doing and why this is such a useful capability.

Here you are Walter, this is what Apple say.

Frequently asked questions about Apple ID - Apple Support

Can I share my Apple ID with someone else?

You shouldn't share your Apple ID with anyone else. It provides access to personal information including contacts, photos, device backups, and more. Sharing your Apple ID with someone else means you're giving them access to all your personal content, and it may lead to confusion about who actually owns the account.

To share photos, a calendar, iTunes purchases and more with someone else, try these sharing features.

Now go and argue with them,

That's more than what you or anyone else here promoting the idea of "Apple's design " has done. Right now, their documentation agrees with the "low level" customer service rep in that call history list sharing is not by design.  Other users have repeated the same results after talking with Tech support.  Yet the mantra continues.  Perhaps you don't understand how customer service reps work.  I assure you that if Apple had designed call history list sharing between devices on an iCloud account, it would be in a CSR FAQ list which the "low level" customer service rep would have searched and then told the person that this was normal.

    Nope,

    Their documentation says;

You shouldn't share your Apple ID with anyone else. It provides access to personal information including contacts, photos, device backups, and more.

Why are you making things up?

Time for a reminder for the benefit of new readers:

Readers of this thread should note that an iCloud account is designed as a single user account, using an iCloud account as a multi user account is unsupported and will result in unpredictable and often undesirable results.

We share an Apple ID specifically for this reason, as it was designed.

I made nothing up but posted what iCloud accounts share as documented by Apple.  Call history lists are not mentioned in the documentation that you posted and the documentation I posted suggests that they are not shared.  Why are you making things up?
