Q: My recent calls appearing on another iPhone!?

Hi,

Hopefully you can help.

I use my phone for business and we have noticed in the last few days that all of the calls I make and receive are appearing in my wife's iPhone recent call history?

I have hunted high and low in settings on both phones but with no joy.

It is only affecting calls i make, not the other way round? so i am not seeing calls my wife makes on her phone in my recent call history?

It is also not affecting text messages...

We are both using the same iCloud account but the inconsistencies above suggest its something more involved (or very simple!)

The slightly odd thing is that it only seems to do it when my phone is at home, i went out this afternoon and the calls made/received have not appeared on her history. so maybe its a wifi thing?...but...

I also phoned vodafone when i got home to see if they could help (they couldn't!) and that short dial number is also not appearing on her history?

You don't have a right to bully, nonetheless... do you ever read the TOS?

Bullying?  I'm allowing you every right that you wish.  Should I start denying you those rights?

As they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.  If you opened the link I provided, it would have put you right at the post with the author clearly visible. If you read the post, you would see the multiple Apple links.

I think the discussion is going at cross-purposes here. Those who have stated that Apple says you can use one ID for all the devices and computers that a single owner wants to use, are correct. I have 2 iPhones, an iPad, and a Mac. All are signed into the same Apple ID, since these are my devices and my computers.

However, there have also been many posts throughout this thread where users are complaining because they share the same Apple ID amongst 2 or more different people altogether. That is what Apple absolutely does not recommend.

The Shared Call Log issue is one that has two different camps. One camp believes that this is a feature that was intentionally implemented by Apple in conjunction with Handoff and Continuity. The other camp feels that this is not a desirable feature and that it is actually a bug that does not have an easy workaround.

For those of you in camp 2 - your only option in regards to this forum is to send feedback to Apple indicating your displeasure at the inability to control this feature/change/bug (whatever you want to call it), without having to sacrifice other features which you wish to have. In other words, you would like to have a Setting that allows you to "Keep Call Logs for devices/computers signed on to the same Apple ID separate for each device/computer".

Continuing to have arguments as to whether this is a feature or a bug is counterproductive. We cannot change the way it works, we cannot explain why it works that way, or why certain workarounds are successful for some people and not for others. The only way to make sure that Apple is clearly aware of the dissatisfaction that you are experiencing with this change in behavior is to send them feedback, and keep sending it, and keep telling anyone you know that also is unhappy with the way this works to send it. Believe it or not, Apple reads all feedback, and oftentimes acts upon it based on user experience.

So, use the method that is available to you and use it regularly. Many of the updates that we see with each iOS release address issues that have been reported by users. If enough people use the feedback tool regarding this particular experience that they consider a negative user experience, then there is every possibility that it may be addressed in a future release: Apple - Feedback

    Cheers,

    >> I would guess that some folk are not syncing their iCloud Drive on all devices and some are. Or maybe some are only seeing this when they are on syncing which may only be when they are on WiFi so it seems inconsistent.

But that wasn't true in my case - I can't speak for everyone.  Logically, one only needs to prove one false case to show that the theory is erroneous.

    1. I had iCloud turned off on all devices both pre 9.2.1 and post

    2. Problem occurred whether or not I was on the wi-fi

    3. Once it started, I would see the other device calls immediately, not when synching

Once again, it's time to post this from Apple's FAQ:

Can I share an Apple ID with someone else?

Your Apple ID should not be shared with anyone else. It provides access to personal information including contacts, photos, device backups, and more. Sharing your Apple ID with someone else means you are giving them access to all your personal content and may lead to confusion over who actually owns the account. To share iTunes & App Store purchases, photos, a calendar, and more with someone else, try Family Sharing, iCloud Photo Sharing, or other easy-to-use sharing features.

Wow that is depressing. Not knowing why it is happening for sure does not help.

Thanks but I didn't mention sharing with anyone else I mention MY DEVICES and was told by a troll that Apple doesn't want me to use the same ID for all MY devices.I was clear and the Troll understood what I was saying but just likes taking a position and holding his breath.

    >> However, there have also been many posts throughout this thread where users are complaining because they share the same Apple ID amongst 2 or more different people altogether. That is what Apple absolutely does not recommend.

Thank you for a thoughtful post. I agree with Apple that for most users, having separate accounts is the way to go.  If for nothing else, the amount of free iCloud storage is per account.  In their FAQ, they state (https://appleid.apple.com/#!&page=faq):

Can I share an Apple ID with someone else?

Your Apple ID should not be shared with anyone else. It provides access to personal information including contacts, photos, device backups, and more. Sharing your Apple ID with someone else means you are giving them access to all your personal content and may lead to confusion over who actually owns the account. To share iTunes & App Store purchases, photos, a calendar, and more with someone else, try Family Sharing, iCloud Photo Sharing, or other easy-to-use sharing features.

Now Apple or the iOS software has no way of knowing in whose pocket a phone is sitting in.  So from a technical perspective, call list sharing either makes sense or doesn't make sense independent of who actually is using it.  If it doesn't make sense for a single user, it certainly won't make sense for multiple users.  What can be said is that in the case of multiple users, an option exists to sidestep the issue and is probably a winner for many folks - but not for all.  And for single users with multiple devices, I suspect that most don't want their call lists merged - if for nothing else, the merging doesn't tell you which phone the call originated from - it makes it appear that the call came from the current device which is a lie.

So I think the helpful way is to do the following:

    1) User complains of call list merging

    2) Some who wants to help asks if the device is for multiple users or a single user

    3) If it is for multiple users, point out the side-stepping option of separate Apple IDs.  If that is not acceptable for any reason, go to step 4.

    4) If it is not, tell users that there are problems in this area and to write Apple about it.  Point out that it doesn't work the same for everyone and not every solution posted works for everyone.

When 4) is addressed by Apple, folks who are in 3) and don't want separate accounts will be happy as well.

    .

Yes, Apple expects you, as an individual, to use one Apple ID on all of your devices. However, this means that you will be sharing call logs. If you don't like the fact that it works that way, try turning off iCloud drive. Or, as a last resort, use two different Apple IDs.

Apple recommend that you use one ID for all of your personal devices, the same one.
