I have hdmi connections from both the cable box and and apple tv into the tv. The optical cable is from the tv to a Bose system. The cable stations broadcast in 5.1 apple tv movies only in 2.0.
I called Apple support and they told me it will only play in 5.1 if the optical cable is run from the Bose system directly to Apple TV.

You need to run the optical cable from AppleTV to the Bose System.

If the Bose system does not have 2 inputs, you'll have to mess around.
Does the TV have optical input? You could AppleTV optical > TV Optical in then Optical out > Bose.
