You are running out of RAM. Either put in more RAM or stop running so much software concurrently.

17 Reasons Why Your Mac Runs Slower Than it Should

Slow Mac Performance? This Article Solves It!

Fix slow start-ups in OS X | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews

Avoid using any third-party software that claims to clean up your computer. Usually this software does more bad than good. Furthermore, you don't need it. Note that all computers will become slower over time even under normal use. Experienced users typically erase the hard drive and do a clean install from scratch at least once a year or whenever installing a major OS upgrade. Of course doing so also means you maintain regular and multiple backups.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Alternatively, see:

Choose the version you have installed now:

OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X

OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X

OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X

OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

DO NOT reinstall OS X or remove any software.

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

May 23, 2015 3:54 AM in response to newcooyote

Your hard drive is dying. As others have stated, you must ensure that your data is properly backed up NOW! In fact, if you don't already have backups, it could be too late. When the drive dies, it will take your data with it, and it may already have corrupted some of your data.

Once your data is safe, you will need to replace the drive. Unless you're comfortable cracking open your machine and replacing the drive yourself, contact Apple or another Apple-certified repair shop for assistance.

I don't. I may have a long time ago but since realizing those programs are bunk, I removed. Why is it still showing and how do I eliminate any trace?

You didn't remove those things properly, so there are still components installed. However, that is not what you need to be worrying about now. Get your data backed up and get the drive replaced!
