If your iPhone is officially unlocked by the original carrier, it should work with most European carriers' SIM

Thanks, ckuan. iPhone not unlocked yet. But what is "the original carrier" ? Does that mean Telstra ?
The carrier you got the iPhone from (have cell contract with).
If it's from Telstra then yes, ask them to unlock iPhone before your trip to Europe.
Thanks, ckuan. I shall try this. Appreciate your prompt answers. If the iPhone cannot be unlocked (because Apple has some way of stopping that happening) then I will not have a mobile.
Apple has nothing to do with iPhone locking, they only keep the database for unlocked iPhone submitted by the carriers.
1. You request the unlocking with your carrier
2. If you qualify and approved, carrier send the unlocked status to Apple.
3. Apple update the database.
4. You restore iPhone using iTunes see below

5. Done you can use any SIM.
