I would like to free up space on the drive, however I have only been able to delete one backup at a time. Is there an easier way?
You can delete them all.. how does that suit?
Go to the airport utility and select disk then erase.
When you select erase then pick quick erase.. in 1min all files will be gone from your TC.
Now start again.

It is not practical to try to free up space by deleting backups manually. You can spend 4 hours deleting files and there will be very little space freed up.
Your options are as follows, listed in order of most expensive on down:
Add another Time Capsule and start backing up to that device
Add a USB drive to your existing Time Capsule and start backing up to that destination
Erase the existing drive and start over again
