Turn off applications changing desktop

I have a macbook pro and use the multiple desktops all the time. I normally use 3 desktops and find it annoying that they change order when an application icon is pressed. I would prefer it to either stay in the same order or not change desktop when an application is clicked. Is there a way to deal with this? or am i stuck?
