Have an old iphone for to give to a friend for hotspot use but ive forgotten both passwords for login and apple id. tried to reset it but i cannot connect to to the servers to update it through itunes. need help!!

What happens when you connect to iTunes and restore the phone as new? It should erase the phone and then you can set it up as you wish.
If you need to delete the phone from Find my Phone, in order to remove activation lock, if using iOS 7 or higher) you will need to reset your Apple ID password:
i cannot restore it, it says this. " itunes could not contact the iphone software update server" and i cant put the passcode in to connect to the wifi
Was the phone hacked/jailbroken in the past?
Was the computer you are using ever synched with a hacked/jailbroken phone? In any case, it seems that the problem is with the compter (iTunes) and not the phone. Do you have the latest version of iTunes installed? In any case this might help (I am assuming you are using iTunes for Windows, which I do not use):
No i am using a macbook and yes its been used to jailbreak another device. latest itunes is installed
OK. So if you used it to jailbreak another device, there is your problem.
it says it has something to do with the internet connection. im guessing its talking about the iphone. but i cant get that to work because i cant go to the settings
Ok, here is the simple version:
You have used iTunes in an unsupported manner (synching/updating a hacked iDevice). The error you are getting is common for hacks/jailbreaks regardless of the internet connection. You cannot get any further help here for unsupported methods as it violates the TOS to which we all agreed to.
I suggest you try Google; I'm sure you will find a solution there.
