I have 48 GB of memory left. I have 2 GB of ram. Should I just throw in the towel and get a new computer? Should I take off the Yosemite operating system?

Thanks

I've been using late 2008 MacBook with 8GB RAM and it's comfortable to use Yosemite. You need to upgrade RAM to use Yosemite.
