Is it "appropriate"? That is up to you. Your iPad 2 will support iOS 8.3 if that is your question. While some users have experienced some issues with the latest iOS on the iPad 2, that is not to say it will manifest itself on your device.
I am running iOS 8.3 on my iPad 2 with very few issues. For me, the added features & security was worth it.
Just updated mine & it ruined my iPad.
My iPad 2 32GB is happy with 8.3. However, there are reports of problems when trying to upgrade with too little free space. Ours was at 5GB free when iOS8 released, so I off-loaded a pile of image backups taken with my DSLR and some other stuff, leaving about 20GB free at the time of updating
