"??i Recently upgraded to an iPhone 6 and have reset my iPhone 5 to factory settings in order to give it to my daughter, problem if she would not be able to set it up with different carrier other than AT&T. How can I tell if it is an unlocked phone. I own it and I don't want it to just sit on the shelf.

Whether the iPhone is under contract or not is not what determines their ability to change carriers.
Its whether the iPone is unlocked so it can take a sim card from a different carrier that's important.
An Unlocked iPhone that is using a sim card under contract, can still use a different carrier's sim card.
Where is the SIM card.? I didn't think it had a SIM card..

The sim card tray is located on the right side of the iPhone.
There should be a small pin hole on that side. Insert a sim removal tool, or a paper clip and push in to eject the sim tray.

Only the carrier the iPhone is locked to can officially unlock the iPhone.
You need to contact the carrier.
Note: Apple do not unlock iPhone .
When the unlock is removed, you need to follow the instruction here:
Where did you purchase the phone? What carrier did you use it with? If the device was locked to AT&T, or actually any carrier, the only way to get it unlocked is to contact the carrier the device is locked to, see if they provide unlocking services, and if you qualify. If so, then follow their directions to unlock the device. The carrier is the only one that can authorize an unlock.

The two network types that cell phones use are GMS and CDMA. The major US carriers AT&T and T-Mobile run on GSM networks, while Sprint and Verizon Wireless use CDMA.
Once the phone is unlocked you'll need to find a carrier that supports GMS.
