Are iphone5 able to switch wireless carriers if they are not under any contracts?

"??i Recently upgraded to an iPhone 6 and have reset my iPhone 5 to factory settings in order to give it to my daughter, problem if she would not be able to set it up with different carrier other than AT&T. How can I tell if it is an unlocked phone. I own it and I don't want it to just sit on the shelf.

iPhone 5, iOS 8.3, null

Where did you purchase the phone? What carrier did you use it with? If the device was locked to AT&T, or actually any carrier, the only way to get it unlocked is to contact the carrier the device is locked to, see if they provide unlocking services, and if you qualify. If so, then follow their directions to unlock the device. The carrier is the only one that can authorize an unlock.

You're welcome. If you had an AT&T contract and are out of it now, but still an AT&T customer, they will unlock the device. Here is an article about their qualification information, http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB414532&cv=820#fbid=6d7EKuCF_dr Here is a link to their online unlock request form. https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
