I have an iphone 4S. I recently upgraded to ios 8. i desperately need to downgrade as the phone is so s-l-o-w and the performance *****. Please advise. A friend told me there is absolutely no way to go back. Suggests a new phone. UGH

Is everything slow, or just some aspects? My wife's iPhone 4s is on iOS 8.3 and she has no major complaints.
You cannot downgrade, but you might try a reset. Hold down the Home and On/Off buttons, ignoring the slider until you see the apple logo. Let go of the buttons and the device will reset. You will not lose any data. May be worth a try.
sadly everything is very slow....opening messages and when i try to type a message i have typed like 5 words before the first one is even seen on the screen....so frustrating...my friend that works at a local wireless provider said that apple should have never made upgrade to 8 for the 4S ...it just simply isnt built for that great of an upgrade....im so upset

Try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary
Make sure you've 10% of your storage free.
If you have not yet done a Restore, you might as well. Nothing to loose...
just updated my ios to 8 on my 4s and need to downgrade!
