Audio Midi not allowing 5.1 surround

I have a mac pro 2008

I plugged an optical audio cable into my optical out

I then plugged the other end into a "DENON AVR-1603"

I fallowed the tutorial for surround sound out that is made by apple

but when I go to audio midi to set it to surround mode its grayed out and wont let me use it
