"Find my ipod" thinks my iPod and iPad are 500 miles away but recognizes that my iPhone is here with the iPad and iPod

I have three devices all sitting here together. Yet the app thinks that the iPad and iPod are about 500 miles away.

iPod touch, iOS 5.0.1

The iPhone can identify location via gps, cellular, and wi-fi. An iPod or iPad (without cellular) can only identify location based on wi-fi signals it can see and that can be inaccurate. There is some more information in iOS 7: Understanding Location Services - Apple Support
