Some of my pictures are blacked out in photo. They appear when clicked but are still blacked out later. If I edit them then they remain. I have seal thousand pictures and do not want to manually edit all of them. What can I do?

Usually, this means that Photos has not yet completed migration and/or syncing with iCloud Photo Library. Give it more time and don't power down your computer at night - Photos will continue the process when in the background.

I willlet it run over the memorial weekend. Should I see some pics coming up to indicate that it is progressing?

It's hard to predict which ones will be migrated next, so it's hard to know where to look for the next ones to show up. You might want to scroll to an area that is mostly filled, with just a few blank thumbnails.
