I am at a loss. Safari does not work at all on my mac desktop. The icon is there but clicking it does not do a thing. However it does still work on my ipad and iphone. Please help. Since I can't delete and reinstall what else is there to do without going into technical stuff.
iMac, Mac OS X (10.3.x), 27 inch late 2012
If you go to Finder, open the Applications folder, and launch Safari from there, does it work? If so, drag the current Safari icon out of the dock, and drag the one from the Applications folder to the dock.
Another possibility. Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks Eric, for some reason I don't see a Library in my home folder. Have moved the Safari icon from applications folder in task bar but still the same. Am using google chrome as a back up for now but just frustrating.

You are welcome. Please re-read my last post. It tells you how to make your user Library visible if using 10.9 or 10.10. For 10.7 or 10.8, in Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library.
Sorry Eric, I did find the /.plist and moved it to desktop, restarted and moved the safari icon from applications to the task bar but still no joy. It doesnt even bounce when you click on it.
What OS are you using? You might want to correct your profile which shows 10.3. If you are using 10.10 try the link below.
