Students with Watches

As a teacher, I need to collect phones from students before each test to help curb cheating. Now with the apple watch, will I need to collect those too. Must the watch be connected to a phone to work? Can pictures be taken and saved on the watch?

I love technology and love to use it in my classroom. However, the watch can be another obstacle to deal at testing time.

Without a connection to iPhone, the Watch is severely limited in its functionality, including inability to connect to the Internet. The Watch has no built in camera, it only works as a remote controller for the iPhone camera. It foes, however, store some information locally, do you might want to play it safe.

Depending on the size of your classroom, the Watch might still be able to connect to it's paired iPhone even if you take the phone away from the student. You would have to actually turn off the iPhone to prevent this until the iPhone is returned after the test.

And was pointed out, a student could technically take pictures of "cheat sheets" on their iPhone and have those images show up - even if the iPhone is turned off - on their Watch for viewing.

Also, they could technically send a text message to themselves - from another iPhone - with answers and still view that even if disconnected from the iPhone.

So, yeah, the safest way would probably be to ask the student to give you his/her Watch just to be sure. (At least until the PTA hears about it......)

I think you'll have to confiscate it. The available ways to cheat I can think of already even without a phone:

- First off if you take their phone and it's still within bluetooth range it might be with an average size class room, you'll need to make sure the phones are OFF

- watch can have a photo album with cheat sheets in it

- Song names can be used as cheat notes

- some 3rd party apps might be able to have some offline data show up

- if both the watch and phone are on the same network, then they can communicate and the kid can message and make calls from the watch

- though the watch has wifi it currently can't work as a browser or anything without the iPhone, but you never know when some app comes out or apple changes things that allow the watch to do more without the iPhone.
