Is the clear plastic cover on the end of the magnet on macbook chargers necessary? Or is this just for packaging and aesthetic purposes? How does it help?
If it is necessary, where can I get a new one (because I lost mine).

What are they called, and where can I get a new one?
I have had some eight of them over the years, for Macbooks and extra chargers I have had. Every one, I wanted to keep. Every one was lost (they fall off so easily).
Once you accept that it is disposable, you won't care anymore.
Try an Apple Store. They may have some laying about from all the demos and service jobs.
