my new iMac (withYosemite) is not recognizing my new Superdrive

I need to load Windows on my new iMac and I am working with Bootcamp. When I bought the thing last week, the agent said that I would need a Superdrive if I was going to load Windows from disk. Bootcamp first wants to check to see if a USB drive is plugged in. I plugged in my Superdrive and nothing happens. The drive doesn't respond in any way, nor does the iMac or Bootcamp for that matter recognize that the drive has been plugged in. Can someone help me with this?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

You need to insert a disk in the superdrive.

Plugging in the superdrive to a USB it will not show anything that lets you know you have one.
