plz help!! grey screen when in ipod-itunes library... what do i do??

so i just got an ipod 2nd gen 2GB today from a friend. i have no info on it so i have no idea what im doing. i installed itunes but when i try to open the ipod library it opens in another screen and is grey looking. i cant do anything from here...ie adding or deleting songs, playing songs, ect... so can someone please help me figure this out?? ive been doing circles in this stupid website for about an hour now and im still stuck! 😟
