I purchased & downloaded an audio book from iTunes. I synced it to my phone & saw it under audiobooks on my phone. When I opened it to read the book disappeared from my phone. I tried to download it again but iTunes wanted me to pay the $24 again. How can I get it back?

Audiobooks are a one-time only download from the store, if you want to redownload it then you will have to pay again
Does it show in Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage > Music on your phone (if you have audiobooks on your phone then you should see an Audiobooks section under that) ?
If not then have you tried re-syncing it to your phone from your computer's iTunes ?
