Use in Europe

going to Europe (4countries). have iphone 4s and verizon service. don't want to get their global plan. have downloaded viber and skype. two questions: can i get wifi free so i can get emails, text and search web or use apps without charges?

Can I make calls using viber or skype with wifi without huge international charges? Is that how it works? Or should/can I unlock and get sim card? Sorry, I am new to this...

The last time I was in Europe was back in 2009. I don't know if the situation has changed, but when I was there I found that free WiFi is extremely rare, and where it does exist, it does not tend to work well.

Contact Verizon. They can unlock the SIM slot so that you can use it with a local GSM carrier while you're traveling.

I was in London two years ago and essentially used my iPhone as an iPod. I used FaceTime and Skype over WiFi for any international "phone calls" that were necessary. We went to a phone store there and got some bare-bones cheapie phones and a minimal amount on a pay-as-you-go plan for contacting one another and making local calls.
