upgrading from LE8 to LE9

I have the LE9 disc. I am still running LE8 on my iMac (OS X 10.6.8). If I install LE9, is it a completely new version? Will the old version still be there? Will LE9 find all my sounds/loops, even the non-Apple ones I installed?
