4 Port USB Charger

Leviton manufactures a 4 port USB charger that fits into a standard duplex electrical receptacle. The output is 4.2A - 5VDC (=21 Watts). I note that Apple USB power adapters are typically 12 W or less. Will it harm ipads or iphones to charge at this higher wattage?

you can use 20000 watt without any problems

volts are pushed and if higher then the device is made for it will toast the device

amps are drawn a device does not draw more amps they it was build to draw

sp the 4.2 amps is how much current the charger can supply before it because of ohms law has to lower the volts

This charger charges at max 4.2 Amps current: when you put in more than one USB connector the current will be divided over the two/three/four USB connectors. Thus one device can be charged with max 4.2 Amps, depending on other usb connected.

This is not at all dangerous for iPhones iPads. Even better: it charges more quickly, which is not bad for modern Li-Ion batteries.

An iPad for example will take ages to charge if you have only 1 Amp available, normally you use 2 Amps or more.

Good shopping.

An iPhone 5 series or earlier will not draw more than one amp, whether the available current is 1 amp, 2 amps, 4.2 amps, or 1,000 amps. An iPad similarly will not use more than 2.1 amps, no matter how much current capacity the USB adapter is capable of supplying. So providing more than 1 amp for the iPhone or 2.1 amps for the iPad will not make it charge any faster.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus its a different story. While they come with a 1 amp adapter, they can use up to 1.5 amps, so the WILL charge faster if a power source greater that 1 amp is available.
