How do I sort "all photos" by date taken, not date added? (Photos app, Yosemite 10.10.3)

How do I sort "All Photos" by date the photo was taken, not date added? It is absolutely useless for the "All Photos" section to be sorted this way, as "Last Import" fulfills any need to see things sorted by added date. Under view, the line where you can uncheck "sort by date added" is greyed out!! What is the point of a whole-database view based on date the photos are added??

It is excruciating not to be able to change this (as far as I know). How can I do this?

I very well may have to move back to iPhoto...

Apple stuff just keeps getting worse. Not being able to sort is ridiculous. Having to make a smart playlist as a work around is also very inconvenient. Worse, I have to first assign keywords and that requires an import. Photos is just as inferior an app as there is. Apple you should try using your own apps and see how bad they are. The fact that I can't just browse my photos with the finder is also absolutely limiting.

You can just browse photos using the finder and you can edit then using Preview - or any other program you want - use of Photos is totally optional and if it is not what you want simply do not use it and use what you do want -

as to telling Apple how to run their business - if you look at their numbers you will find that they are excellent at running their business - in fact they are the largest company in the world due to their excellence in running their own business so unless you are running a larger and ore successful business you are simply way off base and have no idea how to run a successful business

LarryHN,

Apple numbers are great, but that is because of the non computer business. More recently they have been focused on music, the watch and so on. They need to give additional attention to their original products and software.

They need to stop crippling products such as removing the headphone jack or just halving USB-C ports.

That completely stoped me from upgrading, period.

I switched to Adobe Lightroom after Apple discontinued Aperture. I had spent years using Aperture all wasted because they dropped it and replaced it with an inferior product.

Lightroom is a full featured photo management tool.

I know Apple Photos puts files in the file path on the next line (where: myUserName is replaced by your account name)

/Users/myUserName/Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary

You have to show package contents to see the pictures. That if you rearrange or edit those files you confuse Photos. So you can't edit the contents of the Photos library. I just point Lightroom to the Masters folder of the photos library.

Not too convenient.

The Photos Timeline view is sorted by date imbedded in the photo, not by date added. All other views are also sorted by the date of the photo except the All Photos album, which is date added. You can't change the sort view of any of the application created albums.

The last import view shows only the last import, and does not include photos from PhotoStream.

Yeah, I know that - I just don't understand why the view can't be adjusted to make this not the case for the "All Photos" album, which is essentially the master list. It seems strange that the capacity is built in, but inaccessible (i.e. can't deselect "sort by date added"). I suppose you mean to write "you can't do it"?

May 24, 2015 6:45 PM in response to gilyan

No, the Photos Timeline view is the Master List. The All Photos album is just a smart album showing all the photos in the library sorted by date added. Since the Last Import album only show the last import and does not included photos added to the library from PhotoStream, you can look at the All Photos album and find any photo recently imported. If you import photos with random dates, they will be hard to find in the Timeline view since they will put put in the proper order.

Yes, the fact that you can't deselect it means you can't change the sort order.

You can't change or delete the albums created by the application.

If the Timeline view doesn't suit you needs and you just want a straight forward album showing all your photos sorted by the date taken without a timeline, then you can create a new smart album. Be creative on the criteria like "Date" is after "1/1/1900". That will create the view you are looking for.

Sorry but there are really no sort option available - tell apple you needs - https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

You state that you understand that so accept it - no one can change it until Apple does - and telling them what you want is a critical part of making it happen - continuing to demand here is not productive and will accomplish nothing

I have a similar issue, but it concerns photos where I have adjusted the date/time after importing them. Even in albums I create myself, the photos seems to be sorted by the original date/time (which for some pictures is 7 hours off since I forgot to change the time zone on my camera when traveling while photos taken with my phone have the right time). This means that photos of the same scene, taken around the same time, end up separated.

Anyone who has advice on how to fix this?

I just upgraded from 10.9.5 to 10.10.5 and have been struggling a bit with photos too- but I hope this helps

While I can't seem to find a way to sort in Album- all photos-

you can create a smart album and it gives a variety of ways to sort the photos in the new smart album (date range, title, keyword, etc)

I just created a smart folder with photos for the entire date range of my album and it seemed to put them all in date taken in the new album

Hope this helps

Just create a smart album call "All Photos" (or whatever you want) and use a filter that includes everything - for example, all photos that are not RAW (if you don't have any RAW images), or filename is not ____, or the like. By using "is not" or "does not incude" and the like, and putting something that no photo is or has, you'll include everything.
