I can't log in to my MBP since my keyboard in "symbols"

I have a strange problem.

I was writing in Words for Mac and inserted a "symbol". Then I closed my MBP. When opening again and asked to enter the password, the keyboard is set to "symbols" and I can't insert correct password (which is in roman / latin letters). Since I can't log in I can't change the keyboard language from "Settings". What can I do to solve this issue? Thankful for your support!!

Kind Regards / Mikael

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know know more information about your computer; size, exact year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. Any history prior to your incident would also be helpful.

Try these:

Reset SMC

Reset NVRAM

Hi Spudnuty,

Sorry for not mentioning the required info, but since I can't come past the log in screen, I can't check all the details. It's a MacBookPro, 500MB, late 2011 with Yosemite OS X (don't know the version). No issues with the MBP before.

I tried the options you suggested with no success. I have even tried to reinstall the OS X, but since the keyboard is "stuck" in symbols, I can't make a reinstall since I need to enter the password to be able to access the "Macintosh HD". I have also tried to restore from a backup from Time Machine, but same issue with password and symbols keyboard.

Any other suggestions?

Try using an external keyboard. If it works ok, that indicates possible damage to the internal one.

It's not possible to set the keyboard to "symbols". Perhaps it is behaving as if the option key were stuck down, or the keyboard layout is switched to a language other than US. Do you have more than one keyboard active? If so, which ones?

So, like Tom says, external keyboard. If that works you probably need a new keyboard.

I had to replace a keyboard because it was constantly typing sssssses. It was a tiny hair caught between the contactor membranes:

You can barely make it out in this photograph.

There have been some weird anomalies under Yosemite. That's why I'm not there and won't be until all the weirdness goes away.

Hi both,

I tried with a usb keyboard and everything is as normal. I have figured out that the "symbols" that get typed when using the hardware keyboard is the same as if I hold down shift + option and then type. Must be that some of those keys are "stuck". On the other hand, if I use the virtual keyboard, I get same "symbols" as if using the hardware keyboard, which for me indicates a software issue. I have three keyboards active, US, Chinese and Korean. US and Chinese give same output and when selecting Korean, the output becomes different but still weird.

Do you know any software magical solution or is it time to change the keyboard?

I can't log in to my MBP since my keyboard in "symbols"
