To upgrade to a total of 16 GBs you will need 2 x 4 GB modules. You must add in pairs.

Yes, to get to 16GB it's always best to upgrade in matched pairs. However you may want to consider upgrading to 24GB (2x8GB) and then if you ever want to upgrade to 32GB you can easily replace the existing 2x4GB.
Next and most important you must compatible ram that works with your mac.
OR
Using any other Ram I am afraid you will have issues.
