Why do some contacts have thumbnail photos and others are full screen?

When I've added photos to my contacts' profiles, I've noticed most are thumbnail size photos when they call. However, I've had a few that are full screen as well as that I've noticed it on other iPhone users phones. Any clue why it does this?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.3

In former iOS versions, it was based on how the photo was placed into Contacts. If it was placed into Contacts directly on the iPhone, the photo would be full screen. If the photo was imported into Contacts from some external source, the photo would be thumbnail size. I don't know if that's still true with iOS 8.3 - I don't think it is true for photos added now.
