Unused Airport Extreme

I have cable ISP and it's connected to an iMac via ethernet cable. It works just fine. I also have an Airport Extreme that I'm currently not using. Can the A.E. be placed elsewhere in the house unconnected from the modem, just plugged in for power, and still serve any purpose? Thanks.

None, unless you connect it to the modem using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.

Then, the AirPort Extreme will function as a wireless router for wireless devices, provide 3 Ethernet ports for devices to connect using a wired connection, and the USB port on the AirPort could be used to connect a hard drive for data storage.
