After using earbuds for the first time, my text notifications and other sounds stopped working or are stuck on mute. My alarms , ringers and music are all functioning normally. My settings are unchanged - they all indicate full volume. Any ideas?

If you remove the earbuds from the device and attempt to change the volume on the phone with the volume buttons, what displays on the screen? Do you see the word Headphones under the volume control? If so, then the device is stuck in the headphone mode. This can happen if the headphones are not used much. You may try plugging and unplugging the headphones a couple of times to try and clear the sensor that detects the insertion of the headphones. You can also try a reset of the device, which could electronically fix it, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. This will not affect any of your data.

Try inserting and removing the earbud plug a few times. Sometimes the switch that turns off sounds in the earphone jack gets stuck. It's also possible that there was dirt in the jack before you inserted the plug, and that dirt got pushed into the innards of the phone. That problem is harder to fix.
When I depress the volume buttons, it displays 'ringer.' I tried the reboot you suggested but it didn't work.
Check the mute switch on the side of the phone. It may have been inadvertently switched to Mute. Music would still work on Mute.
Thanks... I tried that, but no luck. It does not seem to be stuck in headphone mode since 'ringer' displays when I try to adjust the volume
Thank you... That worked. I wish there was some notification that mute was activated... The button is recessed and not easily pushed because of my phone case.
You're welcome. Generally it is easy to see the switch activated, however some cases mask the button so you cannot see the color marker. It shows on the screen when you turn it off/on, but that is all.
