brightness or backlight control

is the brightness control in preferences / displays on the 24" lcd monitor a brightness or backlight control? and is the factory default maximum?

imac intel 24", Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes it is Apple / System Preferences / Display / select Display. You can adjust display brightness by sliding blue dot on the Brightness slider bar. Also on the keyboard that came with your iMac and many others you can adjust the display brightness with F14 down and F15 up. The keyborad control is great you don't have to fuss with going into Sys, Pref's. brightness control.

This is way late, and you've probably figured it out already. I imagine the questions arises out of you using something like the Spyder 2 Pro to calibrate?

In any event it is a backlight control which is used to change your monitor's brightness.
