I have an iMac and a Macbook Air onto which I would like to install Final Cut Pro X. Can I do that by buying only one set of the software?

It's a lot quicker to simply copy your FCP X app from one computer to the next using either a USB hard drive or memory stick.
Yes, that's all you need to do as there are no "hidden" files like in legacy FCP.
In addition to what has already been said, let me just add that the FCP X license allows you to install on the macs that you own and control, so it is perfectly legal to buy once and use on both your macs.
