I Mac issue

i have an I Mac that I got in 2008 or maybs earlier. I was running version 10. somethIng on it! I niw have a problem with it. It powers on and allows me to login but that's as far as it goes , it then freezes and doesn't load the desk top page or the dock . I hope someone can help
