when iphone screen is locked and a new text message comes in - there is no alert sound?

When I have my iphone screen locked - a new text message comes in - but there is no alert sound

I have to keep checking my screen to see when texts come in???

the settings look fine...

You need to go to Notifications. Make sure a sound is set, you have it set for Lock Screen, you do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, and you do not have the Mute Switch on. Need to check all of those things.
