If you are using an Apple router, then configure the AEX to Extend an Existing Network. If you are not using an Apple router, then you cannot extend the network with an AEX unless you connect it to the router using an Ethernet cable and set it up to Create a New Network or Join an Existing Network (also called "Bridge Mode.")

Which device is the AirPort Express "extending"? Is this another Apple router?

If yes, can you provide the model numbers of both AirPorts?

If no, can you provide the model number of the "other" router and the AirPort Express?

Will the AirPort Express extend the signal from the main router using wireless, or using a wired Ethernet cable connection?

Are you still using OS X (10.6.8) as you indicate in your profile?
