Q: Suddenly iDVD is very slow

Hello,

after getting MacPro with yosemit iDVD runs very fast, I was surprised and glad.

Since a short time, it takes many time to fetch the texture schemes, and rendering a movie (iDVD calls it "burning“) take the 10x time as before, 14hours in the first estimation for below two hour movies.

The movies have following profile (spent from handbrake):

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Also how much playing time is in your iDVD project?

Is this a movie you've used before with iDVD.  Movies are not my area of expertise so I'll have to let those in the know drop by and examine that aspect.

Give this a try: Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot normally and follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Try creating a new project, add the same movie and make a disk image of the project.

    Also delete the iDVD caches:

1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your

    User/Home/Library/Preferences folder.

2 - delete the contents of IDVD'S cache folder: User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD.

    Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 9.26.14 AM.jpg

3 - launch IDVD and try again.

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
