I have a Canon HV20 camcorder with 1394 port.

Apple iMac "Core i7" 3.4 27-Inch (Mid-2011) OSX 10.10.3
I need to dump some DV footage from this camera. iMac has firewire800 port.
If I use a standard 6-pin to firewire800 cable, will the iMac automatically detect my camera?
Can anyone offer any advice, before I go shopping for cables??

It's been a while since I did it the way you describe, but as I recall simply connecting the camera via Firewire, starting FCPX and going to import showed the camera and there were controls for starting and stopping the camera.
I believe the HV20 has a 4 pin firewire connector, so you'll need to go from the 4 pin to a 9 pin FW 800 port (6 pin is FW 400).
There are anecdotal reports of problems with cheap cables, and there have been reports of problems with the Rocketfish brand.
Get a good quality cable.
