What is meaning/function of this symbol?

What is the significance of the dot-circle in black square at right lower corner of image in Aperture? I "click" it and nothing visible occurs.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), 8GB SDRAM; 750GB HD

The image has been edited with an external editor, and is therefore represented by the master created when the file was exported to the external editor.
